Meet The Artist Raja Natraj

Multidisciplinary Artist · Installation Designer · Founder, Goa Art Factory

Where it all began

Born and brought up in Goa, Raja Natraj’s journey as an artist began long before he ever picked up a brush. As a child, he was unusually observant — fascinated by textures on old walls, patterns in nature, the stories hidden in everyday objects and observing details of life. With no formal training and no traditional artistic pathway, Raja taught himself to draw, experiment, and build. What started as instinct slowly grew into a lifelong commitment to creation.

His foundation was curiosity. His education was the world around him. And his early years planted the seed for the multidisciplinary force he would become.

The Self-Taught Path

Raja’s practice developed outside the traditional art school system. He learned by doing — painting walls, carving forms, experimenting with clay, building structures, and studying how materials behaved. This self-led approach became his greatest strength.

It shaped his identity as an artist who does not fit into a single box. Instead, he creates the box, breaks it apart, and rebuilds it in new materials.

Today, Raja works fearlessly across paint, metal, cement, clay, and plaster, making his versatility one of his strongest artistic signatures.

Becoming a Multidisciplinary Creator

Over the years, Raja’s work evolved from pure experimentation into a distinct visual language:

  • emotionally charged portraiture,

  • vibrant colour-driven compositions,

  • bold geometric and urban-inspired works,

  • transformative environmental installations,

  • and organic, carved, textured forms inspired by nature.

Each project deepened his ability to translate emotion into space - not just on walls, but into the environment itself.

Working across diverse surfaces made him adaptable.
Working across complex materials made him inventive.
Working without formal limitations made him free.

A Philosophy Built on Curiosity and Discipline

Raja’s personality - versatile, bold, experimental, and disciplined, is stitched into every layer of his craft. He gravitates toward challenging briefs, unusual materials, and surfaces.

He approaches every surface and material as an opportunity, something waiting to be shaped, pushed, and reimagined.
